Personality and History
Born in London, to Muggle Parents, Edgar did not discover his magical abilities until he had received the letter from Hogwarts. Although initially suspicious, his parents allowed him to enroll the school. Before his trip to Hogwarts, he used to read a lot of books, learned to play the piano and the guitar; he played both instruments while at Hogwarts (preferring the latter because it was more interesting to the girls), which made him stand out. While still a young boy, he used to play a lot with his sister, which resulted in them forming a strong bond between them later on. He had a strong interest in History and Music, but also in Medicine, Chemistry and Science in general. At the age of 10, he finally went to Hogwarts, being one of the rare Muggle-born students of his generation.
Although he was destined to be sorted into Ravenclaw due to his intelligence and thirst for knowledge, an unduly mistake resulted him into being sorted into Slytherin; namely, still shy and reserved at the time, he tried to remember the names of the four houses by repeating them constantly. The Sorting Hat was put on him just as he whispered the name 'Slytherin'. Since he did possess qualities worthy of Salazar's house, the Sorting Hat sorted him there. Although he mostly socialized with Ravenclaw students (he was an outcast among the Slytherin because of his heritage), he developed a love for Potions because of the Sorting Hat's decision. Studying under professor Slughorn, Doyle excelled in the subject and was the only student of his generation to successfully brew the (in)famous Felix Felicis potion. He did good in other subjects, especially DADA and Charms, mastering basics of wandless and non-verbal magic during his final year. He played Quidditch for Slytherin, as a goalkeeper.
After graduating, he stayed in Hogwarts for a while, replacing Slughorn as the school's Potions Master. After a few years, he left and returned home to take care of his little sister, who was terminally ill. He was replaced by Severus Snape, a friend of his. While at home caring for Ariana, he continued mastering the piano. During the Wizarding Wars, he sided with the Order, although he never remained there as a permanent member, only because he did not want to bond himself with any organization. Not long after the Second War, Ariana died. Doyle went into self-exile, where he remained until he received a call from Hogwarts to teach Potions. Remembering the time spent at the castle with some joy, Doyle accepted the offer and returned to his old school.
One would say about Doyle that he is very, very strange. The queerness of his persona is visible from the very start, just by observing his constantly messy, yet fitting persona; although a professor at Hogwarts, he refuses to wear a robe and is constantly seen in a shirt, suit jacked and All-Stars. This would often cause quarrels with the superiors, but due to his expertise in the field, Doyle manages to get things going his way.
He is a very sarcastic person, prone to becoming sardonic. His determined rationalism, which doesn't always function when he himself is involved, often leads to confrontations with people; he will insult people without a moment's thought and is also prone of making fun of them. But, he is far from malicious or mean; he is just miserable and emotionally closeted, and his sarcasm is just a way of dealing with his past and life in general.
He is also prone to control and manipulation, but he seldom uses those abilities for things greater than trifles. His direct approach when communicating with people got him into a lot of problems during the years, most of which he came out unharmed.
All this being said, Doyle has another side. A more emotional and loyal side, which he seldom shows and only to a few people he considers important and/or friends. He will help, though, but you have to know that what he can avoid doing himself and delegating to others - he will.
