Personality and History
Although of magical heritage, Oswald Lovecraft spent his childhood and most of his life raised by Muggles. His parents were killed by the Ministry of Magic shortly after his birth for practicing occult magic and he was sent to an orphanage in England.
The Ministry erased all of his official records and gave him a new identity, that of Muggle Randolph Zann. Zann grew up unaware of his magical heritage and abilities and, not receiving a letter from Hogwarts due to his false identity and the Ministry erasing any official trace of him, he entered adolescence before becoming aware of his powers.
His initial presentations he attributed to a fragile psyche and latent delusions caused by excessive reading of horror stories, particularly Poe and Lovecraft. He struggled in silence before finally, at the age of 19, coming to terms that his powers were not merely delusions but true powers.
Wondering how this was possible, he searched through the family history of the fictive Randolph Zann, but soon found that Randolph Zann was nothing than a mask, a person that does not actually exist. Torn between what he considered to be his reality and what his reality actually was, Zann had a nervous breakdown; he used the chaotic energy to search for his true self, leaving a trail of blood and corpses behind him. While his mind deteriorated, his magical powers grew. He was tempted to join the Death Eaters, but could not find a purpose in their cause.
Ultimately, he located an aging ex-Ministry official, Wilbur Carter, who was one of the officials working on his case. After severe physical and mental torture, Carter finally told the truth to the reborn Oswald Lovecraft, who used Carter's surviving memories to get a glimpse at his past.
He soon calmed down. Or at least - he calmed down slightly. He went into seclusion and traveled the world in search for things he considered to be true while he was a young boy. Namely, he was convinced that H. P. Lovecraft was a Wizard and that his stories were, in fact, a true representation of endless magical potential, hidden around the world. His quest was, of course, unsuccessful, but he considers that to be a sign of his own weakness, not the fallacy of his beliefs.
He lives, in complete isolation, in a small, rotting house on the Welsh coastline, near his parents' last known place of habitat, where he studies the ancient scripts of Dark Magic, hoping to find a way to harvest the power of Cthulhu.
